W2i Digital Cities Convention Next Stop: Seoul

W2i’s Third Asia Regional Forum to Exlore the Local-Government Broadband-Wireless Opportunity Across Korea and the Asia-Pacific Region

Boston. 04/19/2007Boston, Mass. (April 19, 2007) — In partnership with the Korea IT International Cooperation Agency (KIICA), the Wireless Internet Institute (W2i) will host the 14th Digital Cities Convention at the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry on June 26–27, 2007.

The Digital Cities Convention in Seoul is a thought-leadership conference providing local-government decision makers and IT professionals in South Korea and across the Asia-Pacific region with broad exposure to the metro-scale wireless opportunity for cities, communities and regions.

The conference will examine the technology roadmap, from Wi-Fi and WiBro to WiMAX and cellular; the regulatory landscape in Asia and North America; e-Government and wireless-enabled applications for local-government mobile workers; and improved quality of life for citizens. The event further serves as an industry summit for the ecosystem of technology equipment vendors, service and application providers, and systems integrators.

“Following major citywide deployments in Singapore and Taipei, the timing is excellent to bring the Digital Cities Convention to Seoul,” said Daniel Aghion, Executive Director, Wireless Internet Institute. “Across Asia-PAC, local authorities in jurisdictions large and small are actively exploring the broadband-wireless opportunity in search of cost savings, enhanced public services, and improved quality of life.”

W2i’s first Asia Regional Forum was held in Shanghai in May 2005. In June 2006, City of Taipei hosted the 8th Digital Cities Convention, which produced the Taipei Wireless Cities Declaration signed by 15 local governments, from Manila, Hanoi, and Glasgow to San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Portland, Oregon.

Private-Sector Endorsements

In addition to ongoing cooperation agreements with international-development organizations, such as the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and CIFAL Atlanta, the W2i Digital Cities Convention is endorsed by the WiMAX Forum and has secured the early sponsorship of Cisco Systems, IBM, Firetide and Simdesk.

About W2i and the Digital Cities Convention

The Wireless Internet Institute (W2i) is an independent forum bringing together stakeholders around the world to accelerate the adoption of wireless Internet in support of social and economic development and better-managed cities. Held annually in three to four regions of the world, the W2i Digital Cities Convention includes a thought-leadership conference exploring the planning and deployment of broadband-wireless infrastructure, applications and services; practical training for local authorities; roundtables for wireless service-provider executives and digital-inclusion stakeholders; the annual Wireless Communities Best-Practices Awards; and a Technology Showcase produced in partnership with the public sector, private sector, and international development institutions. Building on conventions in Philadelphia, Shanghai, San Francisco, Bilbão, Houston, Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, and London, planning is in final stages for Chicago (May 22-23), Seoul (June 27–28), São Paulo (Sept. 11), London (October 16–17), and Washington, DC (Dec. 11–12).
