W2i Announces 3rd Annual Best Practices Awards Winners
The W2i Wireless Communities Best Practices Awards pay tribute to local governments and supporting organizations implementing broadband-wireless solutions for cities, counties and regions.
Boston, Massachusetts. 12/13/2007 —
The 3rd Annual Wireless Communited Best Practices Awards were conferred at the W2i Digital Cities Convention in Washington, DC, on the evening of Tuesday, December 11, 2007. Thera Bradshaw, former Chief Information Officer for the City of Los Angeles, officiated, and the Awards were handed to recipients by Kenneth Fellman, Former Mayor, Arvada, Colorado. In the category of e-Government Applications, there were two winners: - Minneapolis, which was represented by Lynn Willenbring, Chief Information Officer
- Gangnam District in Seoul, represented by Yu Joong Ju, Won Suk Yang, Kyung Ah Lee.
The City of Houston received an Honorable mention, and was represented by Janis Benton, Deputy IT Director, and Liliana Rambo, Chief Parking Official. Singapore — Wireless@SG — won in the category of Economic Development and was represented by Ang Peng Seong, Deputy Director of the Infocomm Development Authority. Macedonia Connects received an Honorable Mention, and was represented by Glenn Strachan, former project director, and Jonathan Metzger of the Academy for Educational Development. Winning in the category of Community Momentum Building was Yuma, Arizona, which was represented by Eddie Carrera and Greg Wilkinson from the City's Information Technology Department.
The winner in the category of Digital Inclusion was Greene County, North Carolina, and its Beyond Tobacco program. The international jury includes representatives from the United States (including the National League of Cities) Europe and Latin America, and has developed a platform to review and evaluate submissions based on the best practices, and to elevate those projects deserving of widespread emulation: - Costis Toregas, the Jury Chair, is President Emeritus of Public Technology Institute here in Washington, DC
- Axel Leblois is Executive Director is a cofounder of W2i and currently the director of a partner organization G3ict, the Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies.
- Sonja Reece is Mayor Pro Tem of Normal Illinois and Chair of the Information and Technology Committee for the National League of Cities.
- Tereza Porto is President of the Center of Communication and Information Technology for Rio de Janeiro State, in Brazil.
- Nick Leon is Head of Urban Programs for the Think Play Do Group, the consulting arm of Imperial College London.
