Johannesburg, South Africa Location: South Africa Abstract:
In an effort to reduce operating costs for an existing WAN (Wide Area Network) and meet the growing demands of users for better communication and full access to business and networking applications, the City of Johannesburg chose wireless broadband. They commissioned a pilot installation of wireless network solutions from several providers for proof-of-concept testing. The testing phase was successfully completed by Multisource Telecoms, a specialist in low-cost communication systems in Africa. The solution was built over Alvarion’s systems including the ICASA-approved 5.4 GHz BreezeACCESS VL. These base stations with advance OFDM technology and Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) capability were strategically deployed in locations throughout the city. 300 municipal buildings were initially connected to the wireless broadband network, providing them with access to centralized business-critical data services for the first time. The City of Johannesburg enjoyed a complete return on investment within just three months while providing higher access speeds and additional services to more offices.
