Helsinki Location: Finland Abstract:
Helsinki, one of the most technologically-advanced cities in the world, until recently only had itinerant wireless broadband access through a network of interior hot-spots in cafés and shops. Mobile access required multiple subscriptions to numerous providers. OCP, the municipal wireless Internet provider, initially sought to deploy a wireless mesh network in order to blanket the city with consistent access, and after review and analysis, decided to deploy technology developed by InspiAir, an Israeli wireless technology company. The city now offers municipal-wide access through a network of only 15 801.11b access devices with 1-3 mile range, a throughput of 6Mbps per access point, and less than 3 milisecond latency. Further, users experience a 6-7 milisecond delay in transition between nodes. Helsinki is now planning on extending the network to outlying cities, to communter trains, and to the marina.
