Colorado City Favors MobilePro Model
Longmont is partnering with MobilePro, a private company, to offer subscription-fee broadband-wireless service to residents and businesses. The city is forgoing the route some other cities have taken, in which wireless access is provided for free and paid for through revenue from advertising on users’ computer screens.

MobilePro Drops Sacramento Plans
Wireless broadband provider MobilePro Corp. said it is dropping out of a deal to build a Wi-Fi network in Sacramento. The Bethesda, Md.-based company had worked with city officials for more than a year to establish a wireless broadband network. But MobilePro pulled out of the agreement late last week, saying the city's plan to deliver free, ad-supported wireless high-speed access is not viable.

Google Defends Mountain View Wi-Fi Network
Google's outreach blitz coincides with the impending launch of its first wireless Internet network. By July 1, beta testers will get their first crack at the Wi-Fi network Google's built in Mountain View, its hometown. The Mountain View network isn't expected to become available to the general public until later this year.

New Orleans Council OK's EarthLink
Cisco Systems, announced that the city of Farmers Branch, Texas, a first-ring suburb northwest of Dallas, selected the outdoor wireless "mesh" offering from Cisco and MobilePro Corp. MobilePro will act as the wireless Internet service provider for Farmers Branch and manage the city's mesh network, allowing the city to offer Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) 802.11 b/g connectivity to consumer, academic, commercial and government users.
