City Hall Paying Price for Free Wi-Fi
As Dave Pokorney, city manager of Chaska, Minn., told News.com: "I've heard a lot of city officials say they want to have a Wi-Fi network. They don't know why they need it, but they want it. My advice to them is that the technology should fit the mission rather than the mission fitting the technology."

Rhode Island is in the process of setting up a wireless network that would provide statewide coverage. The $20 million project is expected to be completed by 2007, and would focus on commercial, emergency, and government uses.

Intel to Invest $1B in Emerging Markets
Intel will spend more than $1 billion during the next five years to help bring computers, training and Internet connectivity to emerging nations. Called the World Ahead program, the effort essentially expands on other programs Intel has conducted to bring computing to countries like India and China, particularly to people who live in small cities and villages.

Iridium Seeks Niche in Emergency Response
Just a month before the official U.S. hurricane season begins on June 1, Iridium Satellite LLC today unveiled satellite telephone communications equipment that will interoperate with existing UHF and VHF radio systems already used by police, rescue agencies, firefighters and other first responders. In an announcement today, the Bethesda, Md.-based vendor said the equipment can prevent much of the widespread communications troubles that plagued the Southeast U.S. after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita pummeled the area last year.

Canada on Course with Wireless Deployments
Fredericton is a pioneer and has already completed the first phase of its free Wi-Fi project and is well into the second, expected to cover the entire 50,000 residents of the New Brunswick capital by the end of the year. Nationally, Inukshuk Wireless Inc. has completed its initial phase, which brings access to about 12 million people in 20 cities across the country, from Victoria to St. John's.

Camvera Deploys Its 30th Municipal Network
Camvera Networks, a wireless broadband integration and managed services company, announced that it has completed its thirtieth municipal wireless deployment for bringing high-speed broadband access to under-served rural communities. CityNet, owned by the city of Tifton, Georgia, is expanding its city-wide cable and high-speed broadband system with a county-wide wireless network for Tift County. When completed, the system will cover an area of approximately 310 square miles utilizing a combination of wireless technologies from Redline Communications and Navini Networks.
